Radio frequencies
Radio frequencies are, by their very nature, scarce resources. We are currently witnessing an exponential increase in the demand for frequencies due to the explosion of wireless data traffic (Internet of Things, mobile communications services, etc.).
The management of the radio frequency spectrum occurs at the international level (International Telecommunication Union - ITU), European level (European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations - CEPT), and national level.
Under the amended law of 30 May 2005 on the organisation of radio wave management, the minister responsible for radio waves is in charge of radio frequency policy and legislation at national, European and international level. The minister grants licences for the use of the spectrum, while the Luxembourg Institute for Regulation (ILR) is responsible for examining frequency applications, coordinating frequencies and organising public consultations, and assists the minister in the day-to-day management of the radio spectrum.
